The twenty-fifth installment of one of the most famous film franchises of all time, No Time to Die, opened in American theaters on October 8, 2021, after a series of delays that marked its production.
The film held special significance for fans as it marked Daniel Craig’s final appearance as James Bond – ending an era that began in 2006 with the critically acclaimed Casino Royale. It was also the last James Bond film to be produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, before Amazon’s MGM Studios took creative control of the series.
Action and the return of the classic in a new guise
At the beginning of the film, Bond is enjoying retirement in Jamaica, far from the spy intrigues that have characterized his life. The peace is disturbed by the arrival of an old friend from the CIA, Felix Leiter (Jeffrey Wright), with a request to help him rescue a kidnapped scientist. The search leads him to the dangerous and mysterious villain Lyutsifer Safin (Rami Malek), whose plan involves a biological weapon capable of causing a global catastrophe.
Along with Craig, the film brings together a number of familiar and new faces: Léa Seydoux returns as Madeleine Swann, while the world of Bond is completed by M (Ralph Fiennes), Q (Ben Whishaw) and Moneypenny (Naomie Harris). New to the franchise is the character of agent Nomi (Lashana Lynch), who carries the label 007 and brings additional dynamics to the story.
Production marked by obstacles
The direction is signed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, the first American at the head of the Bond franchise, who brought to the film a combination of classic spy action and a modern, more emotional approach to the characters. The filming process itself was extremely turbulent – from the initial creative disagreements and Daniel Craig’s injury on the set, all the way to the global COVID-19 pandemic, which delayed the premiere by more than a year and a half.
Box office success and accolades
Despite all the challenges, No Time to Die became one of the biggest box office hits of 2021, grossing over $770 million worldwide. Critics praised the combination of spectacular action scenes and emotional depth, and the film also won an Oscar for Best Original Song. The ballad No Time to Die was performed by Billie Eilish, while the soundtrack was composed by Hans Zimmer, bringing additional emotional power to the film.
The ending that changed Bond’s world
The biggest surprise of the film was its ending – for the first time in the history of the franchise, James Bond dies on screen. This bold decision divided the audience and caused numerous debates, but at the same time it confirmed how different Craig’s interpretation of the character was from previous incarnations: more realistic, emotional and filled with internal conflicts.
Across five films, from Casino Royale to No Time to Die, Daniel Craig redefined James Bond, turning him into a vulnerable and complex hero rather than an invincible, flawed icon. His era ended in an unexpected way, leaving the audience without an answer to a question that has intrigued the film world for years: who will be the new James Bond?
