BEFORE she became Adam Sandler’s favorite movie “mom,” Oscar winner Kathy Bates almost turned down a role that would give her one of the most fun experiences of her career. When she first received the script for the film Vodonoša (The Waterboy), she reacted by throwing it straight into the trash, writes Far Out Magazine .
A script that ended up in the trash
As Bates recalls, her agent warned her that she didn’t even have to read the script, but he had to pass it on because the producers had attached a specific financial offer. Without that offer, the world would probably never have met “Mom” Boucher – Bobby Boucher’s overprotective mother who obsessively cares for her son and serves fried snake.
“I read the first 12 pages,” Bates admitted to Vanity Fair. “It was really stupid, it was a football movie, and I was like, ‘Eh,’ and I threw it in the trash.”
The niece who changed everything
Not long after, her niece accidentally noticed a crumpled script in the trash can. Curiosity made her pull it out to see what it was about. When she read the name Adam Sandler, she was shocked and exclaimed, “Adam Sandler! Don’t you know who Adam Sandler is!?”.
Bates, already an Oscar winner and known for her serious dramas, admitted she had never heard of the comedian, whose films Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore were already huge hits. But after her niece begged her, “You have to do this!”, she decided to take the advice and take up the script again.
An opportunity to relax and laugh
This time, she read it all the way through and discovered a warm, comedic story about a socially awkward young man finding his place in the world. “One of my Achilles’ heels, both as a person and as an actress, is that I take things too seriously,” she admitted, adding, “This was a chance to just let loose, play, and be silly.”
What does the film follow?
The 1998 sports comedy follows Adam Sandler as Bobby Boucher, a shy and somewhat naive young man who works as a water boy for the college football team. After being mocked for years by the coach and players, Bobby discovers that he has an incredible talent for taking down opponents on the field.
With the support of a new coach, Bobby becomes an unexpected sports star, but he must confront his mother who opposes his success and the changes that fame brings.
